NU Online News Service, May 29, 12:13 p.m. – U.S. assisted living facilities are charging an average of $2,159 per month, or $25,908 per year, according to a national survey by LifeCare Inc., Westport, Conn.

The firm, which conducted the survey for the MetLife Mature Market Institute, a unit of MetLife Inc., New York, found that monthly costs ranged from $592 in Jackson, Miss., to $3,696 in New York.

Assisted living facilities are facilities that offer less specialized help with medical care and activities of daily living than nursing, homes but more support than ordinary apartment buildings usually provide.

Assisted living facilities tend to cost less than nursing homes, which charge an average of $61,000 per year, according to the MetLife Mature Market Institute.
