Kim Named New York Life President
New York Life has announced that John Kim has been elected president, effective immediately. He succeeds Ted Mathas, chairman and CEO, who remains in those roles, and continues to report to Mathas.
Kim, who retains the role of chief investment officer, joined in 2008 after serving as president of Prudential Retirement. Earlier he had been president of CIGNA Retirement and Investment Services. He also spent 17 years with Aetna Life & Casualty, where he rose to the position of CEO and CIO of Aeltus Investment Management as well as CIO of Aetna Life Insurance and Annuity Company.
The company also announced that Chris Blunt will return to run the investments group as president. He will report to Kim.
Blunt joined in 2004 as head of New York Life Investments’ retail investments strategy. He most recently headed the insurance and agency group with co-president Mark Pfaff. Pfaff will continue to run agency operations and report to Kim, who now has overall responsibility for the group. Pfaff plans to retire at year-end after 30 years of service.
Also, Yie-Hsin Hung has been named CEO of New York Life’s asset management subsidiary, New York Life Investment Management LLC (NYLIM), effective immediately. She will report to Blunt.
Hung was previously co-president of NYLIM. She replaces Drew Lawton, who has decided to retire at the end of this year. He is now a special advisor to Blunt.
In addition, Douglas Wheeler has been elected a senior vice president in its office of governmental affairs. He will continue to report to George Nichols III, SVP in charge of the office of governmental affairs.
Wheeler joined the firm in 2011. Prior to joining, he was the director of the division of insurance at the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance. In addition, he was vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at National Atlantic Holdings Corp. and the Proformance Insurance Co.
