9 TED Talks every financial advisor must watch

Your article was successfully shared with the contacts you provided.

As a financial advisor, it’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities, working IN your business instead of ON your business. But making an effort to help grow yourself personally and professionally cannot fall at the wayside. Taking charge of your personal and professional development will enable you to strengthen your business throughout your career.

Whether it be engaging in private or workshop coaching, or simply attending a lunch & learn, reading articles, subscribing to blogs, or watching short videos/lectures that challenge you, and force you to expand your thinking and potential. You should never become complacent or comfortable about skill acquisition and knowledge.

TED Talks, TED.com’s, most popular content through social media, shakes up the traditional thinking on personal and professional development, by designing a platform of relatively short videos from the most engaging and brilliant speakers around the world. The TED Talks library is stacked with over 1,800 videos, so if you’re in the mood for something that will heighten all your senses, keep you thinking, challenged, curious, and informed, these talks will do the trick!

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design), a nonprofit organization that first began as a single conference in 1984, has now transformed into a global community, spreading the power of ideas to change attitudes and lives.  Since 1984, TED’s global presence has become so powerful they’ve been interrupting all facets of communication channels.  More specifically, their digital existence is it’s own self-sustaining entity, a “clearinghouse of free knowledge”, with millions of views to TED.com year after year.

The votes are in! And the ClientWise Team has compiled our favorite, most inspirational and funniest TED Talks yet! Here are our TOP 9:

1) Chyna’s Pick (Digital Community Manager): Shawn Achor: The Happy Secret to Better Work

In the mood to laugh and be intellectually challenged at the same time?  This is the video for you, and my personal favorite! Shawn Achor, a Psychologist and the CEO of Good Think, Inc., keeps you engaged and continuously laughing in this entertaining talk in which he intersects and later relates human potential to happiness and success.

Favorite quote:

“90 percent of your long-term happiness is predicted not by the external world, but by the way your brain processes the world. And if we change it, if we change our formula for happiness and success, what we can do is change the way that we can then affect reality. What we found is that only 25 percent of job successes are predicted by I.Q. 75 percent of job successes are predicted by your optimism levels, your social support and your ability to see stress as a challenge instead of as a threat.”

2) Joe’s Pick (Digital Marketing Coordinator ): Malcolm Gladwell: The Unheard Story of David and Goliath

In the mood for a twist on a familiar tale?  Malcolm Gladwell, a New Yorker staff writer, is far from mundane in his interpretation of a classic underdog tale.  This thought-provoking lecture will challenge your thinking, perceptions and assumptions.

Favorite quote:

“David says, “I want to fight Goliath,” and Saul tries to give him his armor, because Saul is thinking, “Oh, when you say ‘fight Goliath,’ you mean ‘fight him in hand-to-hand combat,’ infantry on infantry.” But David has absolutely no expectation. He’s not going to fight him that way. Why would he? He’s a shepherd. He’s spent his entire career using a sling to defend his flock against lions and wolves. That’s where his strength lies.”

3) Sophia’s Pick (Director of Coaching Services): Clint Smith: The Danger of Silence

What if tomorrow morning, you woke up and you couldn’t speak?  You went to the doctor and was told that you’d never be able to speak again? Clint Smith, a poet and an educator, performs this powerful and inspirational piece on why the inabilities to express yourself will inhibit forward movement both personally and professionally. If you’ve never heard of slam poetry, this short video will definitely get you hooked.  Poetry slam styles give traditional poetry reciting a run for its money!

Favorite quote:

“We spend so much time listening to the things people are saying that we rarely pay attention to the things they don’t. Silence is the residue of fear.”

4) John’s Pick (Relationship Manager): Daniel Goldstein: The Battle Between Your Present and Future Self

In the mood to master your decision making abilities about your present and future self? Daniel Goldstein, a Behavioral Economist and Psychologist, keeps your eyes glued to this video by showing you the tools he’s created to help you imagine yourself overtime so you can make the most appropriate decisions for your future.

Favorite quote:

“So why do we need commitment devices? Well resisting temptation is hard, as the 19th century English economist Nassau William Senior said, “To abstain from the enjoyment which is in our power, or to seek distant rather than immediate results, are among the most painful exertions of the human will.” If you set goals for yourself and you’re like a lot of other people, you probably realize it’s not that your goals are physically impossible that’s keeping you from achieving them, it’s that you lack the self-discipline to stick to them.”

5) Alessandra’s Pick (Relationship Manager): Why Lunch Ladies Are Heroes

In the mood for a quick 5 minute video before you leave the office?  In this short but powerful lecture, Jarrett J. Krosoczka, an author and illustrator, reveals how a simple pleasantry can give you a competitive edge by ingeniously heightening your sense of self-worth.

Favorite quote:

“A thank you can change a life. It changes the life of the person who receives it, and it changes the life of the person who expresses it.”

6) Lisa’s Pick (Executive Assistant & Team Project Coordinator): Julie Burstein: 4 Lessons in Creativity

Do you need help getting your creative juices flowing?  Julie Burstein, a writer, radio producer and creator of Studio 360, an international show that explores pop culture and the arts, emphasizes the four aspects of life we need to embrace in order for our own creativity to flourish.

Favorite quote:

“When I sat down to write a book about creativity, I realized that the steps were reversed. I had to let go at the very beginning, and I had to immerse myself in the stories of hundreds of artists and writers and musicians and filmmakers, and as I listened to these stories, I realized that creativity grows out of everyday experiences more often than you might think, including letting go.”

7) Ray’s Pick President & Founder): Julian Treasure: 5 Ways to Listen Better

Can you imagine what it would be like to live your life without any of your senses?  At a young age we learn about our five senses and how these senses help us learn about our world.  Unfortunately, we live in an era where everyone is always in a rush, and as life takes over, we tend to forget to take care of our mind, body and spirit.  In this short TED Talk, Julian Treasure, a sound consultant and author, expresses the importance of listening, and shares five ways to re-tune your ears for conscious listening.

Favorite Quote:

“I believe that every human being needs to listen consciously in order to live fully — connected in space and in time to the physical world around us, connected in understanding to each other, not to mention spiritually connected, because every spiritual path I know of has listening and contemplation at its heart.”

8) Beth’s Pick (Senior Project Manager): Dan Pink: The Puzzle of Motivation

In the mood to become unexpectedly enthralled?  Dan Pink, a Career Analyst and author, examines the differences between the 20th Century motivational model and the new theory of motivation.  Pink’s persuasive TED Talk, illuminates the extreme mismatch between what science knows and what business does.

Favorite Quote:

“The good news about all of this is that the scientists who’ve been studying motivation have given us this new approach. It’s an approach built much more around intrinsic motivation. Around the desire to do things because they matter, because we like it, because they’re interesting, because they are part of something important. And to my mind, that new operating system for our businesses revolves around three elements: autonomy, mastery and purpose. Autonomy: the urge to direct our own lives. Mastery: the desire to get better and better at something that matters. Purpose: the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves. These are the building blocks of an entirely new operating system for our businesses.”

9) Alix’s Pick (Marketing Communications Writer): Simon Sinek: Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe

In the mood for something inspirational and informative?  In this short video,  Leadership Expert, Simon Sinek, points out the principle cause of failure among organizations.  This video is shared so often because he offers up the simplest and most easily-actionable steps to take to create and sustain long-term success.
