Many more U.S. long-term care insurance (LTCI) policyholders are using their benefits to pay for home care, rather than care in a nursing home or other facility.

The American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (AALTCI) has presented that finding in a new analysis of 2014 and 2019 LTCI issuer survey data.

The percentage of new claims beginning with the insured receiving care at home increased to 70% in 2019 from 52% in 2014, according to AALTCI.

A majority of closed claims began and ended with the insured receiving care at home, AALTCI says.

The issuers AALTCI analyzed paid $11 billion in benefits in 2019, up from $8.1 billion in benefits in 2015.
