An online training program to help college students, new advisors and career changers enter the financial planning field is open for applicants through May 24.

The program, called The Externship, now in its fifth year, is led by Hanna Moore, CFP, creator of Amplified Planning, which runs the program. It costs $350 and runs June 3 through July 26.

Amplified Planning says it’s also working with financial planning and RIA firms to strengthen their training and internship programs and has launched the Internship/Externship Program to help firms improve their summer internship efforts.

“I often hear people in the profession say that we have a talent shortage. What I would say is that we actually have a training and retention problem,” Moore, who also is the owner and principal financial planner at Guiding Wealth, said in a statement.

“The talent is out there. Many different kinds of people have a strong desire to join this profession,” she said. “But the same old ways of recruiting, training, and retaining will produce the same old results. After four years and 3,200 alumni, I can say with confidence that The Externship is a game-changer.”

The Externship program is taught by more than 50 professionals and industry experts, who cover topics like retirement planning, investment management, and tax and estate planning. Those completing the course earn 180 CFP Board standard pathway experience hours and 180 experience hours from the Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education.

With close to 700 people on the waitlist before registration was open, Moore expected close to 1,000 individuals to be in this year’s Externship group.

For this year’s Externship, Charles Schwab’s RIA Connect will provide scholarships, speakers and information about current job opportunities in the RIA profession, while the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards will contribute speakers and help those in the program navigate the path to becoming a CFP. The CFP Board is also underwriting part of the registration fee for a number of participants.

Other key partners are eMoney, XY Planning Network, Kaplan, Orion, Morningstar, Asset-Map, the Financial Planning Association, the BLX Internship, Diversitas, Dimensional Fund Advisors, EncorEstates and the Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education.
