Charitable Giving in Focus on June 27 Webcast

Americans’ charitable contributions totaled nearly $500 billion in 2022, according to Giving USA’s just-released yearly report on philanthropy.

This represents a decline in giving after strong growth in 2020 and 2021, Giving USA says, noting that 2022 was only the fourth time that year-over-year contributions fell in the past four decades. (The other years were 1987, 2008, and 2009, which were affected by significant recession and inflationary pressures.)

However, Josh Birkholz, chair of the Giving USA Foundation, said the results are actually better than they could have been, considering the tough economic climate of late 2022 and persistent uncertainty about what 2023 will bring.

“I go back and forth on whether it’s encouraging or discouraging,” Birkholz told the Associated Press in an interview. “There was a 20% to 25% decline in the stock market and an 8% inflation rate, but Americans still gave nearly a half trillion dollars.”

At a time of flux for philanthropy in the United States and globally, ThinkAdvisor is set to host an informative webcast about the state of charitable giving at 1 p.m. ET on June 27.

The event’s speakers are Jeffay Chang, senior trust and estate specialist for Capital Group Private Client Services; Leslie Heffernan, managing director of fiduciary and legal services at Pitcairn; Stephen Kump, CEO and chairman, Charityvest; and Ken Nopar, vice president and senior philanthropic advisor at the American Endowment Foundation.

As ThinkAdvisor’s upcoming webinar will explore, Americans across the wealth spectrum have an increasing array of choices when it comes to how they give, and so they are looking for expert counsel on how to maximize their philanthropic impact while taking into consideration their tax exposure and possible tax policy changes.

This means advisors have a critical and expanding role to play in informing clients about such topics as donor-advised funds, tax deductions and overall financial planning — and helping them build successful wealth-management strategies tied to charitable giving.

Join the complimentary webcast to learn about the latest trends in charitable giving in 2023 and how they impact financial planning efforts for your clients and prospects. We will explore such questions as:

  • How can clients take advantage of developments in philanthropy, financial planning and taxation to achieve both their long-term charitable giving and wealth management goals?
  • What are the key differences between donor-advised funds, family foundations and other popular charitable-giving vehicles?
  • How may the tax landscape change in the future, and what impact will this have on clients’ preferred giving strategies?
  • How can advisors ensure conversations about charitable giving resonate with the next generation of the client’s family?
  • What can clients expect about the future of charitable giving?

Those interested in learning more about these topics and more can sign up for the complimentary webcast here.
