New Hire Roundup: Vanguard Names Davis Head of Fixed Income

This week in personnel announcements and new hires, Vanguard announced that Gregory Davis will become the new head of the firm’s fixed income group; the Brownstone Investment Group hired Matthew Martines; the Alliance for Investor Education elected new officers; and Mike DiCenso went to MassMutual Retirement Services.

Also, David Jacowitz was named managing director of Penn Mutual’s career agency office in Rochester; LIMRA and LOMA announced new officers and members of the board of directors; Laurie Belew was named FPA president-elect for 2014; and Jason Bickler became divisional vice president at Forethought.

Davis to Head Vanguard Fixed Income Group

Vanguard announced Monday that Robert Auwaerter, principal and head of the Vanguard Fixed Income Group, has announced that he will retire in March after 32 years with the firm. He will be succeeded by Gregory Davis, who currently serves as chief investment officer of the Asia Pacific region and is a director of Vanguard Investments Australia.

Prior to his current position, Davis, who joined the firm in November 1999, was a senior portfolio manager and head of bond indexing in the fixed income group. Before joining, he worked at Merrill Lynch as an associate in global debt markets.

Brownstone Investment Group Adds Martines

Brownstone Investment Group announced that it has hired Matthew Martines as managing director as it expands its municipal trading and electronic market making units.

Martines comes to Brownstone from Morgan Stanley, where he spent more than 15 years in various leadership roles within fixed income trading and electronic market making.

Alliance for Investor Education Elects New Officers

Don Blandin has been elected the new president of the Alliance for Investor Education (AIE), a nonprofit consortium of 19 trade group, governmental and quasi-governmental U.S.organizations involved in investor education. The other newly elected AIE officers are Theodore Daniels, vice president, and Robert Stammers, secretary/treasurer.

Blandin, president and CEO of the Investor Protection Trust (IPT) in Washington, replaces Sue Duncan, vice president of the Investment Company Institute Education Foundation (ICIEF), as president of AIE.

Daniels is the founder and president of the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD), and also served as a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy from January 2008 to January 2010. He has more than 35 years of experience in financial management and investments.

Stammers is director of investor education for CFA Institute. Prior to that, he founded a consulting company to aide real estate owners, lenders and syndicators develop and analyze structured real estate investments. He also served as a senior equity analyst with Long Term Short Term Inc., and was senior executive for several institutional fund managers. MassMutual Retirement Services Adds Mike DiCenso

MassMutual has named Mike DiCenso as market leader for the institutional segment of its retirement services division effective Nov. 4. In this newly created role, he is responsible for strategy and business development initiatives in support of the needs of distribution partners and sponsors in this market. He reports to William Silvanic, senior vice president and actuary, retirement services division.

DiCenso brings more than 26 years of experience, having held executive level positions in sales, distribution, marketing and product development in the U.S. and international retirement plan markets. Most recently, he served as the national practice leader for Gallagher Retirement Services. Prior to Gallagher, he was with RSM McGladrey Retirement Services.

Penn Mutual Names Jacowitz Managing Director of Career Agency Office

The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. announced that David Jacowitz has been named managing director of Centra Financial Group, the firm’s career agency office inRochester, N.Y. In that role, he will be responsible for the development of the sales team, including recruitment, training and supervising of producers.

Jacowitz has more than 14 years of industry experience. Earlier he served as senior partner for New York Life, where he was also responsible for recruiting, training, supervising and joint sales. He previously worked as a producer with Metropolitan Life for eight years.

LIMRA, LOMA Announce New Board Officers, Members

LIMRA and LOMA have announced the election of Joseph Monk, senior vice president and chief administrative officer, State Farm Life, as chair of the LL Global board of directors for 2014. Tim Stonehocker, executive vice president, Ameritas Life Insurance Corp., was elected vice chair and will succeed Monk in 2015.

In addition, the board elected seven new members to three-year terms. They are: James Atkins, president and chief executive officer, Legal & General America; Thomas Barefield, executive vice president, distribution, Ohio National Financial Services; J. Scott Davison, president, OneAmerica Financial Partners Inc.; Scott Dolfi, chief operating officer, the Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America; Rino D’Onofrio, president and chief executive officer, RBC Life Insurance; Dawn Trautman, senior vice president, IT operations and strategic planning, Pacific Life Insurance; and Xu Jing Hui, chairman and president, China Pacific Life.

Laurie Belew Named President-Elect of FPA NexGen

The Financial Planning Association and the FPA NexGen community have announced that Laurie Belew is the 2014 FPA president-elect. Belew is a senior financial advisor with FJY Financial in Reston, Va.

Belew has been an FPA member since 2004, served on the task force for the 2007 and 2009 NexGen conferences and is co-leading the mission to bring FPA NexGen events to the FPA of the national capital area chapter. The FPA NexGen community was created for members age 36 and under to foster learning and growth that contributes to the legacy of the profession.

Forethought Welcomes Jason Bickler

Forethought Financial Group Inc. announced that it hired Jason Bickler as divisional vice president, western region, to oversee a wholesaling team responsible for marketing both variable and traditional fixed annuities through broker-dealers. He will report to Paula Nelson, executive vice president and head of annuity distribution.

Bickler is a 25-year veteran in the financial service industry. His career, which began as an actuary, includes various roles in distribution leadership and relationship management.

U.S. Bank Names Sorensen to Private Client Reserve, Minneapolis

Brett Sorensen has been appointed vice president and private banking relationship manager for The Private Client Reserve in Minneapolis. In this new position, he will provide a customized set of services to manage the banking needs of high-net-worth individuals and families, drawing upon the full range of resources available through The Private Client Reserve.

Most recently, Sorensen was a relationship manager with U.S. Bank’s Commercial Banking Group.
