California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announced yesterday that his office will conduct a review of Nationwide/Allied Group of insurance companies’ cyber security measures.

The review comes on the heels of a breach of security earlier this month when a company database was accessed. The incident resulted in the theft of confidential information for one million policy holders and non-policy holders. Information that was accessed included names, social security numbers, and other information used to identify individuals.

Approximately 5,050 Californians were impacted by the security breach however no credit card information was accessed.

Nancy Kincaid with the California Department of Insurance told LifeHealthPro that at this point, the review is in the initial stages which entail setting up meetings with Nationwide leadership to discuss the event and the companies’ subsequent actions after the event.

Kincaid said, “Commissioner Jones does believe Nationwide responded appropriately and has taken the right steps in notifying those affected and assisting with consumer protection related to credit monitoring.”

Nationwide is providing assistance to those impacted including offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection with $1 million in free identity theft insurance coverage with no deductable.

The breach, which occured on October 3, was secured by Nationwide the same day.
