Amy Chen, CLU, just may be the picture-perfect Chinese-American success story. Arriving in the United States from China as a teen with her parents and brother, Chen was educated in Minnesota and grew up in area with very few Chinese-American families nearby. Thoroughly Americanized but grounded in the culture and traditions of China, she is equally comfortable in both worlds. For these reasons, along with her 12 years of financial services experience, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) has appointed Chen to lead its Chinese-American market development and recruiting efforts in its Springfield, Mass., corporate office.

“Amy is uniquely qualified to lead and expand our efforts in raising the awareness of the importance of financial planning, as well as the benefits of a career in financial services for Chinese-Americans,” said Chris Mendoza, assistant vice president of Multicultural Market Development for MassMutual. “Her early career as a investment representative, followed by various positions in training, sales support and strategic development, makes her an ideal candidate to build upon our success in that market.”

Chen’s most recent assignment took her to Shanghai, China, for the past two years, working to develop strategic partnerships between insurance companies and banks.

Self-identifying as “generation 1.5,” Chen is well aware of the lack of understanding that many older generation Chinese-Americans, like her own parents, may have regarding insurance products, estate planning, business planning and long-term care to help with aging parents.

“It’s very important that financial services professionals work with Chinese-American individuals and small business owners to help them understand how to protect their families and businesses, save for their children’s education and adequately prepare for their retirement,” said Chen. “Many Chinese American families have worked hard and earned sizeable assets but have done little in terms of this type of planning.”

Chen joins an already diverse team, specializing in well-informed and culturally appropriate approaches to multicultural markets. “I am pleased to join MassMutual, a company that so strongly emphasizes diversity and inclusion, not only in the marketplace, but in the corporate office and its field sales force, as well.”

Chen points to MassMutual’s success achieved with the Chinese American market, to date–extensive research, attractive whole life insurance products with certain guarantees, the longevity and strength of the company and offices in the Chinatown areas of three major cities–and indicates that this foundation provides a solid base on which she can build a more comprehensive program and reach more of the large Chinese American population in the United States.
