Dean W. Jeffers, a past chief executive officer (CEO) of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, died Thursday, the company announced.

Jeffers, 94, was general chairman and CEO of Nationwide, Columbus, Ohio, from 1972 to 1981.

During his tenure, Jeffers was credited with helping to revitalize downtown Columbus by building the company’s headquarters there, says Nationwide, parent of Nationwide Financial Services Inc.

Jeffers held a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University.
