Relief Riders International and Hallmark Cards Inc. have each been honored with 2010 United Nations NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) Positive Peace Awards. Hallmark was awarded the honor in the large business category, and Relief Riders in the small business category.
“The Voting Academy for the United Nations NGO Positive Peace Awards felt both Relief Riders and Hallmark showed excellence in the areas of self-regulation, employee relations, environmental stewardship and community involvement,” said Relief Riders Founder and Executive Director Alexander Souri in an e-mailed letter on Oct 17.
Companies were nominated based on their positive impact on “their communities through corporate responsibility,” according to Souri’s letter. Relief Riders travels with doctors and other volunteers to remote areas in India to deliver medical, dental and educational services as well as programs that assist families with sustainable food, such as its “Give a Goat” program. That program—one that this editor’s family has supported—provides families with a sustainable source of milk and cheese that they can consume as well as sell or trade at local markets.
