Olivia Mitchell, PhD, is being honored with the Achievement in Applied Retirement Research Award for her field, advancing research in retirement income management and financial planning, during the RIIA’s annual meeting and awards dinner October 4-5. RIIA will also honor financial experts with the Annual Excellence in Communications and the Thought Leadership Awards.

“Professor Mitchell’s research meaningfully addresses our current retirement crisis — a time of upheaval in financial markets, weakness in financial institutions, public pension woes and an aging population with insufficient savings,” says Research magazine editor Gil Weinreich, who will present the award to Mitchell on October 5 at the conference in Boston (Research is a sister publication of Investment Advisor magazine). “It’s a fine mess we’ve gotten ourselves into, but Professor Mitchell authoritatively shows which institutions and instruments might get us out.” Weinreich adds that Professor Mitchell’s award brings her into the rarefied company of previous years’ winners Zvi Bodie, Moshe Milevsky and Larry Kotlikoff.

Mitchell is the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor, Department Chair of the Department of Insurance and Risk Management, and the Executive Director of the Pension Research Council, at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The RIIA meeting will also give attendees the opportunity to refuel and refresh their commitment to retirement income leadership with keynote speaker Marsh Carter, chairman of the New York Stock Exchange. Attendees will also hear from Washington insiders on how policies will impact the retirement income industry, and will participate in comprehensive education programs in retirement income management.

Attendees will also learn of the latest programs and resources available through reports from RIIA Committee chairs including webinar series in current trends and issues affecting the retirement income business and upcoming RIIA-sponsored research report.
