President Obama today brought House Democratic leaders to the White House to talk about getting health reform legislation through the House by July 31.

Lawmakers who attended the meeting include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.; House Education and Labor Committee Chair George Miller, D-Calif.; House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Henry Waxman, D- Calif.; and House Ways and Means Committee Chair Charles Rangel, D-N.Y.

Pelosi is working to pass a comprehensive health reform bill before the House heads out for the August recess, Obama told the press after the meeting with House leaders, according to a written version of his remarks.

“That’s the kind of urgency and determination that we need to achieve what I believe will be historic legislation,” Obama said. “The fact of the matter is the most significant driver by far of our long-term debt and our long-term deficits is ever-escalating health care costs.”

Whatever legislation the House passes should bring down the rising cost of health care, let Americans continue to choose their own doctors, and make quality, affordable health care available to all Americans, Obama said.
