Hawkeye State officials have developed a new independent review program for long term care insurance benefit triggers.

Carriers selling LTC insurance in Iowa must give regulators the contact information for their independent review contact people by Jan. 1, 2009, according to the Iowa Insurance Division, which describes the LTC insurance independent review procedures in Bulletin 08-17.

LTC insurers also must describe the process they have in place to ensure compliance with the independent review requirements, officials say.

“The description shall include: an explanation of how the insurer determines when an insured has qualified for independent review of the benefit trigger decision and the notice the insured receives from the insurer; a copy of the notice sent to the insureds who fall within the scope of the law; and an explanation of the insurers internal appeal process,” officials say.
