The Financial Planning Association has named pioneering planner Don Pitti as the recipient of the 2008 P. Kemp Fain Jr. Award, which recognizes an individual member who has “made contributions to the financial planning profession and upholds FPA’s Core Values of competence, integrity, relationships, and stewardship.” Fain helped found the first chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP) in 1971.

Pitti served as the chairman of the Society of Financial Counseling, which created the IAFP and the College for Financial Planning. He also served as president of the IAFP, which merged with the Institute of Certified Financial Planners (ICFP) to form the Financial Planning Association (FPA) in 1999, as governor of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, and as chair of the Foundation for Financial Planning. Pitti has been a member of FPA and its predecessor organizations since 1969.

He is the founding director of the Financial Services Institute in the Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University in New York where he also serves as an adjunct professor of finance.

Former winners of the award include Charles Hughes, Jack Blankinship, Bill Anthes, Bill Carter, Dick Wagner, and last year’s winner, E. Denby Brandon. Brandon founded Brandon Organizations in Memphis in 1952 with his father. He also wrote A History of the Financial Planning Movement with Oliver Welch.

Pitti will be recognized at FPA’s annual conference in Boston October 4-7.
