When we look for a mutual fund to profile for the Mutual Fund Spotlight feature in Investment Advisor, we often see other funds in the category that were not spotlighted that month, but may be worth a closer look while considering funds and allocations for clients’ portfolios. For this new Web-exclusive feature, IA will list the other funds that were In the Running.
Generally, we select a fund category, and then look at the Standard & Poor’s Advisor Insight Web site for fund performance and rankings by total return in the category we’ve targeted: one-, three-, five-, and sometimes 10-year performance versus peer group and indexes; hypothetical value of the fund if one had invested five years ago, versus indexes; manager tenure; fees, whether fee-based advisors may buy at NAV for clients; investment minimums; and risk versus peer group.
For the February 2007 Mutual Fund Spotlight we looked for an international fund that has had solid performance through the varied markets of the last five years or more. IA profiled Brent Lynn, executive VP and portfolio manager of the $6.4 billion Janus Overseas Fund (JAOSX). This month funds that were also In the Running include:
AllianceBernstein International Growth A (AWPAX)
DFA Invest Grp. International Value (DFIVX) [has a high investment minimum, $2 million]
Boston Company International Core Equity (SDIEX) [has a high investment minimum, $100,000]
Neuberger Berman International Inv. (NBISX)
