Women are more likely than men both to care for older family members and to need nursing home care.

About 67% of U.S. adult women participants have provided long term care, according to a survey commissioned by Genworth Financial Inc., Richmond, Va.

Genworth executives presented the survey results today in Washington, at a hearing of the Congressional Women’s Caucus.

About 19% of the unpaid caregivers surveyed spend at least 40 hours per week providing care. About 80% of those full-time, unpaid caregivers are women.

Another finding was that women 65 years or older have a 44% chance of entering a nursing home. The risk of entering a nursing home is only 27% for men.
