LONDON (HedgeWorld.com)–Gartmore Investment Ltd., which manages the AlphaGen Capella and the AlphaGen Velas funds, both with European long/short equity strategies, has hired a new equities analyst, Pierre Castela.

Mr. Castela joins Gartmore from Kepler Equities, Paris, the firm that was known prior to Feb. 2 as Julius Baer Brokerages. His focus there was on the French equity markets. Prior to that, he managed a hedge fund at Bryan Garnier Asset Management, London, and he has held a number of senior positions at Goldman Sachs and UBS Warburg.

Mr.Castela starts work at Gartmore in April, reporting to Roger Guy and Guilliaume Rambourg.

“Pierre’s appointment is another step in Gartmore’s ongoing commitment to attracting and retaining world-class investment talent that aims to provide our clients with the superior investment performance they seek. We very much look forward to his arrival,” said Stephen Jones, head of European equities, in a statement.

The AlphaGen Capella Fund, launched on Nov. 1, 1999, has a large-cap focus and US$1.6 billion under management. The AlphaGen Velas had its inception in May 2003, and Gartmore describes it as “directional.”

Gartmore is part of the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Columbus, Ohio. The total assets under management in its hedge funds exceed US$4 billion.
