Anthem Reports Higher 4th Quarter Net Income

NU Online News Service, Feb. 3, 5:04 p.m. –Anthem Inc., Indianapolis, is reporting $172 million in net income for the fourth quarter of 2002 on $3.9 billion in operating revenue, up from $103 million in net income on $2.6 billion in operating revenue for the fourth quarter of 2001.

Anthem ended 2002 providing or administering major medical coverage for 11 million people, up from 7.9 million people at the end of 2001.

Much of the membership gain came from the recently completed acquisition of Trigon Healthcare Inc., Richmond, Va., a company that controlled the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licenses for Virginia.
