NU Online News Service, July 23, 5:15 p.m. – AFLAC Inc., Columbus, Ga., is reporting $212 million in net income for the second quarter on $2.5 billion in revenue, up from $153 million in net income on $2.3 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2001.

Operating earnings, which exclude investment losses and a recent change in the way U.S. companies account for past acquisitions, increased to $202 million, from $177 million.

AFLAC sells specialty insurance products, such as cancer insurance, in Japan and the United States.

Growth in the United States has been strong, and performance in Japan has been better than expected, given the weakness of the Japanese economy, AFLAC says.
