Pacific Life Insurance Company is now 150 years old.

The Newport Beach, California-based life and annuity issuer was founded on Jan. 2, 1868, in Sacramento, California.

The company issued its first life insurance policy to its first president, Leland Stanford.

In addition to serving as a founder of Pacific Life, Leland Stanford was a major railroad industry investor, a former California governor and a founder of Stanford University.

Pacific Life lost one of its headquarters buildings to the earthquake that hit San Francisco in 1906.

The company moved its headquarters to Newport Beach in 1972.

The company says it will celebrate its sesquicentennial year by talking about its history, doing good works, and showing how it’s prepared to serve customers over the next 150 years.

Pacific Life has posted a company history website at http://www.pl150years.com.
