Taking control of personal finances is a top priority this year for most Americans, according to Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company.

Northwestern, Milwaukee, has published figures supporting that finding in a summary of results from a recent online survey of 2,309 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

About 70% of the participants ranked taking control of finances as a top priority for 2011, and almost as many said they are confident about their ability to take control of their finances, Northwestern Mutual says.

Northwestern Mutual found that 36% of the participants are placing personal finances ahead of other objectives, compared with 24% who are putting spending more time with family friends first and 14% who are putting spiritual fulfillment first. Only 12% said they are putting their love life first.

For both men and women, finances and personal health are the top two 2011 priorities.

Among women, health is the top priority for 40% and finances is the top priority for 34%. Only 5% of the woman said they plan to work with a financial professional in the coming year.

Among men, finances is the top priority for 37% and health is the top priority for 33%. About 13% of men said they will be working with a financial professional.
