Americans continue to give more to charitable causes, according to Foundation Source. Last year, the level of charitable giving grew 6% from the prior year and reached $617 billion. Individuals gave roughly $394 billion, up 4% from 2024, while charitable bequests donated some $62 billion — a year-over-year increase of 20%. Plus, the number of donor-advised funds rose to 3.6 billion in 2024 from about 3 billion in 2023, a 2025 study from DAF Research found, and DAF contributions topped $90.5 billion in 2024.

When it comes to making a difference, 87% of individuals with at least $3 million of investable assets say their philanthropic giving and decisions do just that, according to a recent Bank of America Private Bank survey. Plus, a majority of those polled see their personal values and beliefs, 83%, and their need to respond to urgent issues, 80%, as important when it comes to guiding decisions tied to charitable giving.

For those with $50 million and up, a sizable number (43%) say that monitoring their donations to ensure it has its intended impact is a challenge: "This underscores the importance of charitable organizations, advisors, and other partners in communicating the positive impact wealthy individuals have on philanthropy. Additional challenges wealthy individuals face include identifying which causes to support (57%) and how much they can contribute financially (38%)," according to the Bank of America Private Bank study.
