Ira Hammerman, former general counsel of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, has joined Bates Group as managing director.

Hammerman retired from SIFMA in December after serving 19 years as SIFMA’s general counsel. He joined Bates on March 1 and will be based in Park City, Utah.

The firm is a leader in regulatory, compliance and litigation consulting for the financial services industry.

“I am delighted to be joining the Bates team, where I have known some of the principals for decades and look forward to serving the client firms and their counsel,” Hammerman said in a statement.

“After 40 years of relationship-building in Washington, I have a nice Rolodex and contact list and will jump on planes when I need to,” Hammerman told ThinkAdvisor.

Hammerman said he “initially thought” he was entering “full retirement” to see what the next phase of life brought in Utah. However, he received several inquiries post his retirement announcement and “immediately became comfortable” with Bates.

“Thematically, what I’m hearing a lot about is the RIA community recognizing that the SEC is seeking to increase its regulatory scrutiny on the investment advisor community,” Hammerman said. “That’s a key growth area for Bates, where they do a lot of work for the RIA community.”

Jennifer Stout, CEO of Bates, said in a statement that Hammerman “is an icon in the financial services industry — a thought leader and spokesperson with four decades of unrivaled experience navigating legal, compliance, litigation and regulatory issues and relationships, including nearly two decades as SIFMA’s general counsel.”

SIFMA announced in September that it hired New York Stock Exchange exec Saima Ahmed as executive vice president and general counsel, replacing Hammerman. Ahmed most recently served as director of NYSE Regulation and deputy head of the Surveillance & Investigations group.

Hammerman also serves as a board member and active volunteer with the Park City, Utah-based National Ability Center, a charitable organization whose mission is to empower individuals of all abilities by building self-esteem, confidence and lifetime skills through sport, recreation and educational programs.
