As the world slowly emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, the combination of easy monetary policy, the enormous fiscal stimulus, the rebounding labor market and increasing consumer spending has driven inflation to “spike to its highest level in decades,” according to asset manager Nuveen.

Inflation is a significant issue for investors because, “whether or not it remains persistent, it is going to have a huge impact on the path of monetary policy and the returns we can expect” in portfolios after inflation ends, Brian Griggs, managing director and portfolio strategist at Nuveen, said Thursday during the Nuveen-ETF Trends webcast “Inflation: Preparing Portfolios for a Shifting Environment.”

Inflation is the equivalent of a “flat tax” that “impacts the most vulnerable in our population — the lower-income [earners] — the most,” he said.
