The Social Security Administration recently released its Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance Beneficiaries by State and County 2020 report, which breaks down, among other things, how many old-age, survivor, disability insurance beneficiaries there are on a local level, and the percentage of the population, as well as each state’s population over age 65, taking benefits.

The research points out:

  • There are roughly 65 million beneficiaries, of which about 49 million receive Social Security benefits, 6 million receive survivor benefits and 9.5 million receive disability benefits.
  • In absolute numbers, the states with the largest populations over age 65 are California, Florida, Texas, New York and Illinois.
  • The total number of beneficiaries in foreign countries is close to 700,000, while of U.S. territories, Puerto Rico has the most, just over 800,000.

The data is put together by the SSA using its own information, including its Master Beneficiary Record, as well as figures collected by the U.S. Postal Service and Census Bureau.
