Elizabeth Tallett to Lead Anthem Board

The board of Anthem Inc. has elected Elizabeth Tallett to succeed Joseph Swedish as the Indianapolis-based company’s chairman.

Tallett will become chairman May 16, Anthem announced last week.

Tallett has served on the Anthem board since 2013. She is the lead director on the board of Principal Financial Group Inc., and she has been on Principal’s board since 1992. She also has served as the lead director on the board of Coventry Health Care Inc. She served on Coventry’s board from 1998 to 2013.

Tallett has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Nottingham.

She has extensive experience dealing with drug companies: She started her career at a utility company and then moved into the pharmaceutical industry, according to PrincetonInfo.com.

Gail Boudreaux took over from Swedish as Anthem’s chief executive officer Nov. 20.
