Andrew “Buddy” Donohue, the former head of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investment Management Division, has joined Shearman & Sterling as counsel in the Investment Funds practice in New York.

Donohue joins the firm after most recently serving as chief of staff to former SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White.

“Buddy brings an unparalleled wealth of knowledge, experience and judgment,” said Nathan Greene, head of the firm’s registered funds and investment advisor regulatory group, in a statement. “Our clients will benefit from his comprehensive, in-depth and behind-the-curtain understanding of the investment management industry.”

In his new role, Donohue advises investment fund sponsors, distributors and investors on transactional and regulatory matters.

“It is a great honor for me to take on this new role at Shearman & Sterling,” Donohue added in the statement. “I have the highest regard for Shearman & Sterling and consider myself quite fortunate to be able to join the firm and work alongside such highly talented lawyers.”

Donohue previously served as managing director, associate general counsel and investment company general counsel at Goldman Sachs; global general counsel at Merrill Lynch Investment Management; and executive vice president and general counsel at OppenheimerFunds, among others.

He has been an officer, director and counsel for numerous investment advisors, broker-dealers, commodity trading advisors, transfer agents and insurance companies.

He has also served on the boards of business development companies, registered open-end funds, closed-end funds, exchange-traded funds, Cayman funds and UCITS.
