Washington state tries to keep health insurance going

Mike Kreidler, the Washington state insurance commissioner, is encouraging carriers to put something on individual and small-group major medical market shelves for 2018.

Kreidler, who was re-elected to his post in November, says 2018 major medical product and rate filings are due May 5.

Filings for dental plans aimed at the Affordable Care Act public exchange plan market are also due May 5.

Kreidler said in a statement that he hopes to maintain stability in Washington state’s health insurance market as President Donald Trump and Congress work on de-funding, repairing, repealing or replacing the ACA.

“Insurers and consumers are understandably concerned about stability because of the uncertainty in Congress over changes to the Affordable Care Act,” Kreidler said.

Kreidler said that he has no idea if an alternative to the ACA will be enacted.

For now, while the ACA is still in effect, the stability of the market should take priority over other considerations, he said.

“The sooner insurers file plans, the quicker we can review them and have a viable market available for Washingtonians,” Kreidler said.

Under the ACA rules now in effect, open enrollment for 2018 coverage is set to start Nov. 1.
