American Portfolios’ first day of business was Sept. 11, 2001.

“When I walked into the office at five to 9, my eight employees were standing around watching the first tower burn,” President and CEO Lon Dolber told Jamie Green of Investment Advisor at the 2016 Broker-Dealer of the Year roundtable. He admitted his first reaction was a selfish one: that his just-formed business wouldn’t make it.

“It wasn’t until I saw an individual on TV who lost 500 employees say that he was going to rebuild the business,” he continued. “If he can do it, I can do it. After all, that’s the American way; we always rise from adversity.”

Listen to the other 2016 Broker-Dealers of the Year reflect on their memories of that day here.
