LUTCF designation program provides training, builds confidence

I always encourage agents early in their careers to pursue the Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) designation as their first credential. I hold the LUTCF and so do more than 50,000 of our industry colleagues.

The program is designed for life insurance and multiline agents, and provides a thorough working knowledge of these product lines, including annuities, mutual funds, disability income insurance, long-term care insurance, and, of course, all varieties of life insurance. It also offers fundamental instruction and skill-building exercises on prospecting, selling and practice management.

Students can complete coursework online or in live classroom settings. The curriculum also includes field activities that give students direct experience working with clients. It’s very hands-on, and it’s amazing how it gives young advisors self-assurance that they can do the job.

The LUTCF program provides knowledge young advisors need to succeed and helps them build confidence in themselves as professionals. It certainly did that for me when I was early in my career.

It does require some real work and dedication to earn the LUTCF. The curriculum consists of three, nine-week courses. Each course is eight weeks of instruction followed by a week of study and review for the exam. Still, many advisors are able to complete the LUTCF program in one year or less.

The LUTCF program is run by NAIFA and was developed by the College for Financial Planning in Centennial, Colorado. It is certainly a good place to start for an early-career insurance professional. More information is available from the College for Financial Planning at
