The American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance (AAMSI) is on track to have about 500 people at its upcoming conference, or 19 percent more than it had last year, according to Jesse Slome.

Slome, AAMSI’s executive director, has also attracted speakers from many insurers to the three-day event, which is set to start April 25 in Kansas City, Mo.

The list of insurers with representatives on the conference agenda includes Aetna Inc., AmeriLife, Bankers Fidelity Life Insurance Company, Cigna Corp., Guarantee Trust Life, Health Care Service Corp., Mutual of Omaha, Transamerica, Unified Life Insurance Company and United American Insurance Company.

“Sales are up,” Slome said.

Given all of the problems insurers have had with sales of some other products lately, the growth in the Medigap market has been getting the insurers’ attention, Slome said.

Slome, the executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (AALTCI), started AAMSI in response to growing interest in Medicare supplement (Medigap) products.

AAMSI itself fielded about 200 calls during the last Medicare plan open enrollment. Slome responded by expanding an agent directory that was already on the AAMSI website. Agents can get an entry in the directory for $99.

“We simply are not staffed or able to handle consumer inquiries, so we needed a better solution,” Slome said.

Offering the directory gives AAMSI a way to refer consumers to producers who can offer tham local, face-to-face help, Slome said.
