The women’s affiliate of UsAgainstAlzheimer’s is holding a fundraising dinner in Washington Sept. 30 and a briefing on Capitol Hill Oct. 1.

Organizers of the events say the affiliate, WomenAgainstAlzheimer’s, will announce a global “We won’t wait” campaign. The affiliate hopes to use the campaign to rally supporters around the world to help take the steps needed to come up with a cure for Alzheimer’s.

At the dinner, Sen. Elizabeth Warren is expected to present an award to Sen. Barbara Mikulski. The dinner emcee will be Diane Rehm of NPR.

At the briefing on Thursday, the list of scheduled speakers includes Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-West Va.

In other long-term care (LTC) community news:

- The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is organizing a campaign to encourage people who provide care for people with dementia to take extra steps to prepare for disasters

In addition to taking the usual disaster planning steps, caregivers need to gather any supplies related to dementia care, such as copies of medications and a recent photo of the patient.

Caregivers also should make sure they have ID bracelets for loved ones with dementia and have labeled clothes with names and contact information, to provide another means of helping authorities identify people with dementia who get separated from their caregivers.

- Genworth Financial Inc. (NYSE:GNW), a company based in Richmond, Va., was a major sponsor of the Union Cyclist International (UCI) Road World Championship event, which took place in its hometown this month. The company offered producers a chance to take part in a Peaks Coaching Group pre-training cycling clinic. The Bedford, Va., company specializes in endurance athlete power training.
