Mike Greene, a CFP who is senior VP of financial planning and advisor business development at Ameriprise Financial, was voted chair-elect of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards at the CFP Board’s June meeting. Greene will become Chair of CFP Board in 2016.

Greene, a West Point graduate who holds a master’s in economics from the London School of Economics, will serve out the term of G. Joseph Votava, who resigned his positions as chair-elect and as a board member of the organization in March due to “personal and business reasons,” the Board said in a statement.

Greene joined Ameriprise in 2002 and assumed his current role at the company in 2009. Prior to joining Ameriprise, Greene worked at McKinsey & Company and CNH Global, in addition to serving for eight years as an officer in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of captain. The CFP Board of Directors Chair Richard Rojeck said in a statement that Greene is a “vocal advocate for the financial planning profession, the CFP certification and the need for more advisors to obtain the certification so that they can help Americans with their most important financial decisions.”

Greene has served on the CFP Board of Directors since 2012.

There was some speculation at the time of Votava’s resignation that there was more to his departure than merely a desire to spend more time on his firm and with his family, though in public statements Votava and the CFP Board said those were the reasons.

In its statement on Greene, the Board says it now certifies “more than 72,000 CFP professionals in the United States.”
