Disability insurance outperforms barking dogs

Insuring the ability to earn a paycheck ranks near the bottom on a list of strategies Americans use to protect what they care about.

Marketers at Anthem Inc. (NYSE:ANTM) commissioned a recent telephone survey of 1,010 U.S. adults age 18 and older to see what the participants are thinking about personal protection strategies.

Anthem organized the survey in connection with the 2015 Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM) marketing campaign, which started May 1.

Company marketers note that only about 40 percent of Americans use disability insurance to protect their paychecks.

When the company asked survey participants about the steps they take to protect their homes, 90 percent said they lock doors and windows, and 74 percent said they have homeowners’ or renters’ insurance.

The results suggest that use of homeowners’ insurance may be almost twice as common as use of disability insurance, even though the risk of facing a career-interrupting illness or injury appears to be considerably higher than the risk of facing an event that would lead to a big homeowners’ insurance claim.

Anthem found that 39 percent of the survey participants said they use alarm systems to protect their homes, suggesting that the penetration of disability insurance among workers may be comparable to the percentage of alarm systems.

Just 31 percent of the participants said they use vicious-sounding dogs to protect their homes, indicating  that use of disability insurance continues to outperform use of vicious-sounding dogs for personal protection purposes.
