How important is your team?

Is your business a team sport? Do you regularly give credit to your team for the success of your business? Or do you view that success as all your own?

How important is your team to your success? Take some time to consider this question. If you feel you couldn’t do what you do without your team behind you, ask yourself whether you make an effort to give them credit and show your appreciation?

Golfer Jordan Spieth, in a post-Masters interview, spoke of his spectacular Green Jacket win as if it were a team victory—in arguably one of the most individual sports there is. “It is the incredible hard work that the team put in to give us an opportunity to be in that position and see what we have,” Spieth told the interviewer.

“We”? Is he being too modest regarding his own talent? Or does the team behind him truly make a difference in his success? It’s rare to hear someone who appears to have won single-handedly give credit to his team rather than speak of his own prowess.

How does your team feel about your success? Do they feel appreciated for their efforts? If you take the time to credit your employees for their part in your success, you can build a firm that functions less like a sole proprietorship and more like a winning sports team.
