New Hire Roundup: Morningstar Shuffles Leadership

This week in personnel announcements and new hires, AssetMark welcomed Jason Thomas; Barclays brought in Gary Domoracki as regional manager for its Boston office; Bryan Wagner was named partner at Grant Bennett Associates; Annette Guarisco Fildes was appointed the new CEO of the ERISA Industry Committee’s board of directors; Zachary Schechter-Steinberg joined Better Markets; Commonfund added Brian Rondeau and Alex Gurvich; the SEC announced the members of the new Equity Market Structure Advisory Committee, including FINRA CEO Richard Ketchum; and Abacus Group added an office in Los Angeles.

Also, SV Rangan joined AIG; Envestnet announced that it has partnered with six firms for advisor educational content for Envestnet Institute; it was announced that Thomas Barthold will stay as chief of staff for the Joint Committee on Taxation; Mariann Montagne joined Gradient Investments; Morningstar announced several leadership appointments; Mildeen Worrell went to the Segal Group; and Nasdaq welcomed Salil Donde.

Morningstar Shuffles Leadership

Morningstar Inc. has announced new roles for several senior leaders. Daniel Needham has been appointed president and chief investment officer for the Morningstar Investment Management group, reporting to Joe Mansueto, chairman and CEO for Morningstar, effective Feb. 2. Thomas Idzorek, who served as president of the Morningstar Investment Management group since 2013, will become head of investment methodology and economic research for Morningstar. Jeffrey Ptak will become head of global manager research by the end of the first quarter, replacing Scott Burns, who was recently named head of asset management client solutions. Rob Pinkerton has been appointed chief marketing officer (CMO), a new role for Morningstar, reporting to Mansueto.

Needham previously served as managing director and CIO for Morningstar Investment Management’s Asia-Pacific operations. He joined the firm when Morningstar acquired Intech Pty Ltd (now Ibbotson Associates Australia) in 2009, where he served as CIO. Before joining Intech in 2002, Needham worked for Zurich Financial Services in Sydney.

Izdorek joined Morningstar when it acquired Ibbotson Associates in 2006.

Ptak has served as president and CIO of Morningstar Investment Services for the past six years. Earlier, he served as Morningstar’s director of ETF analysis, editor of Morningstar ETFInvestor and as an equity analyst.

Pinkerton joined Morningstar through its June 2014 acquisition of HelloWallet, where he serves as its CMO. Earlier, he served in executive marketing and product roles with Adobe Systems, LexisNexis, and Siebel Systems (which was acquired by Oracle).

SEC Announces New Equity Market Structure Committee

The Securities and Exchange Commission has announced the members of its new equity market structure advisory committee, who come from different sectors of the financial services industry, academia and from public interest groups.

Stephen Luparello, director of the division of trading and markets, will be the designated federal officer. Among other members are Richard Ketchum, chairman and CEO, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority; Reginald Browne, senior managing director and global co-head, ETF group, Cantor Fitzgerald & Co.; Kevin Cronin, global head of trading, Invesco Ltd.; Mehmet Kinak, vice president and head of global equity market structure and electronic grading, T.Rowe Price Group; Joseph Mecane, managing director, Barclays PLC; and Gary Stone, chief strategy officer, Bloomberg Tradebook LLC.

AssetMark Adds Thomas

AssetMark has hired Jason Thomas, Ph.D., as CEO and chief investment officer of its Savos Investments division. He reports to Jerry Chafkin, AssetMark CIO, and is based in the firm’s Encino, California, office.

Before joining, Thomas headed Portfolio Design Labs. Before that, he served as CIO and chairman of the investment committee at wealth management firm Aspiriant. Earlier, he was vice president in the funds management group at Wilshire Associates and held positions at Goldman Sachs and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

Barclays Names Domoracki

Barclays has announced that Gary Domoracki has joined as managing director and regional manager for wealth and investment management in Boston.

With over 17 years of experience in the wealth management industry, and licensed to practice law in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Domoracki was the CEO of two prominent multibillion-dollar family offices in Boston. Earlier he worked as a managing director and regional executive for Deutsche Bank and was also a regional manager for Credit Suisse’s Private Bank.

Wagner Named Partner at Grant Bennett Associates

Alliott Group member CPA firm Grant Bennet Associates has announced that Bryan Wagner has been named partner.

Wagner has been an associate with the firm for the past eight years with his practice focused on audit and accounting.

ERISA Advisory Committee Names Fildes CEO

The ERISA Industry Committee’s (ERIC) board of directors has announced the appointment of Annette Guarisco Fildes as its new CEO. She succeeds Scott Macey, interim CEO.

With over 30 years of experience in government affairs and private law practice, Fildes was most recently was the executive vice president, public affairs for the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA). Prior to that, she held senior executive positions within the public policy and government affairs groups for General Motors and Honeywell. She has also advised members of Congress and administration officials.

Schechter-Steinberg Joins Better Markets

Zachary Schechter-Steinberg has joined the independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan organization Better Markets, which promotes the public interest in financial reform in the domestic and global capital and commodity markets.

Schechter-Steinberg, previously the senior economic advisor of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, earlier served as legislative assistant for Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.

Rondeau, Gurvich Join Commonfund

Commonfund has announced the hire of Brian Rondeau as director, risk management and Alex Gurvich as director, Commonfund asset management group.

Before joining, Rondeau was vice president, risk at Harvard Management Co. Before that, he spent 4 years with RBS Greenwich Capital in risk roles.

Gurvich, an adjunct professor of finance at PaceUniversity, was previously a managing partner and quantitative equity portfolio manager at The Rockledge Group, a company he cofounded in 2004. Earlier he worked in venture capital for GE Capital. He also started a buyout advisory firm in the former Soviet Union and worked as a management consultant with Bain and Co.

Abacus Group Adds Los Angeles Office

Abacus Group LLC has announced the opening of its Los Angeles office.

The firm provides hosted cloud services to hedge funds and private equity funds.

SV Rangan Goes to AIG

AIG has announced that SV Rangan has joined as president, international life, consumer insurance. He will report to James Mallon, president, life insurance, consumer insurance, until Mallon’s retirement in March. After that, Rangan will report to Charles Shamieh, currently corporate chief actuary, who will become CEO of life, health and disability insurance in March.

Most recently, Rangan was founder and director of IFG Worldwide Limited. Previously, he was with MetLife, where he served in several senior roles after joining in 2005 as SVP and group managing director for EMEA/India. Earlier, he was with Citi as managing director for EMEA–insurance. Envestnet Partners with Firms for Advisor Educational Content

Envestnet Inc. has announced partnering with six firms that will provide educational content for Envestnet Institute, its educational portal for registered financial professionals. The firms will contribute original content and conduct online courses related to practice management, alternative investments, and other topics. In addition, Envestnet will incorporate the BeyondAlpha advisor community into its platform.

The six firms are BlackRock, Invesco, Ltd., Neuberger Berman, Beaumont Capital Management, Innealta Capital, and The Capital Group’s American Funds Distributors, Inc.

Barthold to Remain at Joint Committee on Taxation

Congressional Republicans have announced that Thomas Barthold will remain in his post as chief of staff on the Joint Committee on Taxation.

Barthold, an economist, was named to his current position in May of 2009, when both House and Senate were controlled by Democrats.

Montagne Joins Gradient Investments

Gradient Investments has announced that Mariann Montagne has joined as senior investment analyst.

With over 20 years of industry experience, Montagne joins from a Minneapolis-based RIA. Previously she held roles at Thrivent Asset Management and Munder Capital Management.

Worrell Joins Segal Group

Mildeen Worrell has joined consulting firm the Segal Group as VP and compliance practice leader for the east region. She works out of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office and reports to John Flynn, SVP and east region manager.

With more than 25 years of experience, Worrell served as senior benefits counsel to the House of Representatives, Committee on Ways and Means from 1991–2009, and gained experience with the U.S. Tax Court and law firm Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan. From 2010–2012, she served as chair of the ERISA Advisory Council and advisor to the Secretary of Labor.

Donde Joins Nasdaq

Nasdaq has announced that Salil Donde is joining as EVP and head of global information services. He will report to Adena Friedman, president.

Donde most recently was CEO of Lewtan Technologies, Inc. Earlier, he was CEO of Marshall & Swift/Boeckh (MSB, a MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. company); before that, he served as president of Fiserv Life and Financial Software and Solutions. He has also held leadership positions at Rackley Solutions and HSB, among others.
