Diagnosis: Sales team disrespect, Part 1

Every day tens of thousands of sales leaders try to manage salespeople who have lost respect for them. And many, perhaps most, don’t even realize they’ve lost control of their teams. Here are 5 signs your sales team doesn’t respect you:

1.    Team members are seldom on time and come and go as they please. Are sellers straggling into the office for scheduled meetings because of a lax office atmosphere? Or is it simply because they have no respect for your ability to control them?

2.    Your interactions with team members tend to be monologues. Are team members listening intently and respectfully to you and freely giving their opinions? Or are they simply waiting for you to shut up and go away so they can return to ignoring you?

3.    Team members talk over you. Are sellers excited to share their ideas? Or do they think you don’t have anything to say that’s worthy of their attention?

4.    Requests are ignored; assignments are completed half-heartedly. Are they so busy taking care of customers that they didn’t have time to do what you asked? Or do they consider your assignments a waste of time and believe you’re not going to do hold them accountable for completing them anyway?

It’s easy for managers to ignore symptoms of a bad case of sales team disrespect. Addressing them might be uncomfortable, after all. If you self-diagnose with this disease, all is not lost.

In the second half of this blog post, I’ll prescribe the treatment and cure for this deadly disease.
