New Hire Roundup: Janus Capital Adds Scholes, Alankar

This week in personnel announcements and new hires, Myron Scholes and Ashwin Alankar joined Janus Capital; Thomas Krysa became associate regional director for enforcement in the SEC’s Denver office; Jeffrey Levi, Jeffrey Stakel and Justin White became partners at Casey Quirk; and Guardian Retirement Solutions added six wholesalers.

Also, Shelley Stiles joined Merk Investments; Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management hired Deepak Khanna as head of U.S. Large Cap Value Equities; Stephen George joined PENSCO’s board of directors; and U.S. Bank made several personnel announcements.

Scholes, Alankar Go to Janus

Janus Capital announced that Myron Scholes and Ashwin Alankar have joined the firm’s investment team. Scholes will serve as chief investment strategist, while Alankar will be the head of asset allocation and risk management and co-portfolio manager of the Janus Global Asset Allocation Funds. Both will report to Enrique Chang, Janus’ chief investment officer of equities and asset allocation.

Scholes is currently the chairman of the board of economic advisors of Stamos Partners and previously served as the chairman of Platinum Grove Asset Management. Additionally, he was a principal and limited partner at Long-Term Capital Management L.P., and a managing director at Salomon Brothers. Other positions previously held include the Edward Eagle Brown professor of finance at the University of Chicago, senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution, director of the Center for Research in Security Prices, and associate professor of finance at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management.

Alankar was most recently the co-chief investment officer of AllianceBernstein’s tail risk parity products and a senior portfolio manager and senior vice president. Prior to that, he spent seven years at Platinum Grove Asset Management, where he was a partner and portfolio manager responsible for equity trading and research.

SEC Promotes Krysa

The SEC announced that Thomas Krysa has been named associate regional director for enforcement in its Denver office.

Krysa started in the Denver office in 2003 as a staff attorney, became a trial counsel the following year, and has supervised the office’s trial unit since 2010. Earlier, he spent five years as a prosecutor in the western criminal enforcement section of the Tax Division of the Department of Justice. Prior to that, he held a clerkship on the U.S. Tax Court.

Casey Quirk Appoints Three Partners

Casey, Quirk & Associates LLC has announced the appointments of Jeffrey Levi, Jeffrey Stakel and Justin White as partners, effective immediately.

Levi joined the firm in 2008 and has 12 years of industry experience. Stakel joined in 2009 and has 11 years of industry experience. White joined in 2008 and has 14 years of industry experience.

Guardian Retirement Solutions Adds Six

The Guardian Insurance & Annuity Co. (GIAC), a wholly owned subsidiary of The Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America, has brought in six wholesalers. Jack Curtis, Lucio Giliberti, Norbert Naths, Bryan Rouse, Terry Terry and George Webb join as regional vice presidents of retirement plan sales. Curtis will directly manage retirement sales in South Texas and Arkansas. Giliberti will manage retirement sales in southern New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Naths will manage retirement plan sales in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, northern Nevada and Idaho, excluding the panhandle region. Rouse will manage retirement sales in Kentucky, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Cincinnati, Ohio. Terry will manage retirement sales in southern Florida. Webb will be responsible for retirement sales in north Texas, including Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin. Curtis brings more than 10 years of financial services experience, most recently as a senior regional retirement representative with Guardian. Earlier he was a wealth management adviser for Merrill Lynch & Co.

A former U.S. Marine and field artillery officer, Giliberti previously worked for Stadion Money Management, United Jersey Bank, Paine Webber and Oppenheimer Funds. He has more than 25 years of industry experience.

Naths brings over 19 years of industry experience and was previously a regional sales director at Great-West Retirement Services.

Rouse brings over four years of specialization in the retirement marketplace, including as a member of the Guardian retirement solutions internal sales team.

Terry rejoins with more than 25 years of experience in financial services and a recent relocation to Bradenton, Florida. Previously, she served Transamerica as regional vice president for Kansas, Nebraska and Kansas City, Missouri.

Webb has 12 years of industry experience and has previous history as regional vice president in qualified plans at Security Benefit.

Stiles Joins Merk Investments

Merk Investments LLC has announced that Shelley Stiles has joined the firm as director of institutional services.

Stiles brings substantial experience in the financial services industry and most recently was head of business development and marketing at another investment firm.

PENSCO Board Welcomes George

PENSCO has announced that Stephen George has been appointed to its board of directors.

George, with 25 years in private equity and investment management, is the founder and managing partner at Omaha-based Panorama Point Partners. Prior to that, he was the co-founder and chief investment officer at Capricorn Investment Group. Earlier in his career he served as a vice president at Goldman Sachs. Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management hires Deepak Khanna as Head of U.S. Large Cap Value Equities

Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management has hired Deepak Khanna as head of U.S. Large Cap Value Equities, effective July 16.

Khanna will be responsible for managing investment strategies focused on U.S. large cap value stocks. His appointment further strengthens DeAWM’s equity investment team in the Americas. Among other hires, in April 2013 the firm added a U.S. Head of Small and Mid Cap Value Equities team led by Richard Glass.

Khanna, a managing director, will be based in New York and will report to Owen Fitzpatrick, head of U.S. Equity. He joins from Lord, Abbett & Co., where he was a portfolio manager of large-cap value and multi-cap value strategies.

Asoka Wöhrmann, Chief Investment Officer of DeAWM, said: “Deepak is a highly experienced portfolio manager with a strong performance track record. He will be a valuable addition to the deep bench of talent we have in our equity investment team in the Americas.”

U.S. Bank Welcomes Two, Recognizes One

U.S. Bank Wealth Management has announced that David Campanella has joined as market leader for the Private Client Reserve in Cleveland, reporting to Heidi Steiger, east region president; Jean Lewis has been named vice president, wealth management advisor for the Private Client Reserve in Seattle, and will be located in the Bellevue, Wash., office; and Mary Justice, market leader of the Private Client Reserve for the state of Washington, has been named to the board of the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

Campanella joins from USAA Wealth Management in Atlanta, where he was a wealth management director. He was previously with the Caffey Investment Group Inc. and Morgan Keegan & Co. Earlier he served in the U.S. Navy for eight years.

Lewis has more than 30 years of financial services experience most recently serving as a vice president, senior relationship manager for KeyBank in Seattle.

Justice has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry.
