Father’s day: a lesson in life & insurance

All of us would love to think that we will be here forever. But that’s not how life works: you have a given set of time here, on this planet.

And it’s never easy to bring up the topic of death to loved ones, especially if they’re healthy and still young. However, the reality of life is that you don’t know when your time is up. And if you think about leaving behind your loved ones without enough money for your funeral, it’s unsettling, to say the least.

When professional football player Rob Sims stepped into the national limelight, following his father’s footsteps, he never thought that his dad would pass away merely a month after being drafted by the NFL. Of course it’s human to get caught up in the emotion of losing a loved one, but that’s when a life insurance policy comes in –- you don’t have to worry about facing financial hardship. In Sims’ case, his father, Mickey Sims, had protected his family with a life insurance policy that even helped his daughter go to college and purchase a home.

Rob Sims learned from his father: today, he protects his family with life insurance as well. And, according to a State Farm Life Insurance survey from 2013, Rob is among the 71 percent of parents who consider it extremely important to have life insurance, as opposed to non-parents (53 percent).

A similar thing happened in my family before I was even born. My grandfather died suddenly of a heart attack after working for three days straight at a hospital without any sleep or breaks. He left my then 6 year-old dad, my 9-year-old uncle and my grandmother as a young widow. But thanks to my grandfather’s strategic planning, my grandmother’s house was paid off immediately, and his life insurance helped put my dad and uncle through school.

My grandmother is now 92 years old. She doesn’t owe her house to the bank, and she never thought she would “last this long,” as she tells me every other day when I call her. Thanks to my grandfather’s foresight, she lives peacefully in her home, where her kids and grandkids grew up in.

This Father’s Day, and every day we walk this planet, we thank our dads for protecting us, for planning for our and their future, for loving us and giving us every tool they can or could, so that our families can continue to be successful and happy.

I am incredibly grateful to have an amazing dad and family. Happy Father’s Day!
