For goal-setting: Dance ‘til it rains

There is a Maasai tribal village in the African savanna which has the incredible ability to bring on rain every time villagers perform their rain dance.

Each year, during the dry season, the landscape in this part of the world turns from a lush green to a shriveled, blighted brown. The lakes shrink to their cracked beds, and at some point, as the water supply becomes dangerously low. That’s when the people of the village gather to take part in a fertility ceremony, hoping to hasten the onset of the rainy season.

The dance these villagers perform is virtually indistinguishable from the dance performed at any number of surrounding villages. They use the same rhythms, the same chants and even the same movements. But the results of the ceremony at this particular village are remarkable. While the dances the neighboring villagers perform bring on rain some of the time, the dance of this special village manages to bring on rain one-hundred percent of the time.

Anthropologists, meteorologists and other experts took note of this phenomenon and came to the village to study it. However, the only thing they could find that might account for the seemingly miraculous results of this special tribe was that while their neighbors performed their dances uninterrupted for three, five or even nine days, the members of the special village would dance… until it rained.

Now, you could argue that there’s nothing miraculous about dancing ‘til it rains if you know that at some point it will rain. But, by the same token, if you know that at some point you’ll arrive at the success you seek, then maybe there’s no great sacrifice in keeping at it until you get there.
