The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is developing a “star rating” program for public exchange health insurance exchange plans.

The new quality rating system will apply to qualified health plans with more than 500 enrollees that sell coverage through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act public exchange program.

The QHPs themselves will have to certify that any in-network hospitals with more than 50 beds meet federal patent safety standards.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is putting the QHP rating information collection program through a routine paper workprocess.

CMS is preparing to publish the QHP rating program paperwork review notice Friday in the Federal Register. Comments will be due 90 days after the official Federal Register publication date.
