Disability and women

Pamela Villarreal says the growing effects of disability on young women may be to blame for falling labor force participation rates among U.S. women.

The participation rate for U.S. women fell to 57.2 percent in 2012, from 60 percent in 1999.

Villarreal, an analyst at the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) — a think tank commonly viewed as preferring market-based solutions to problems over government-based solutions — says in a new NCPA video that a combination of disability trends and the structure of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program may be pulling women out of the labor force.

One challenge is that women who do qualify for SSDI rarely return to the labor force, Villarreal says in the video.
