Covered California considers Web options

Managers of the state-based public health insurance exchange in California are thinking about how the exchange will work with Web-based agents and brokers.

Covered California has put out a “request for information” about the topic that could eventually lead to a formal request for Web agent proposals.

The exchange already works with traditional off-line agents.

The board recently agreed the exchange could look int the possibility of working either with Web-based brokers that would connect the exchange directly with consumers, or with platforms that would connect the exchange with traditional independent agents and brokers.

The exchange also could combine the two approaches, according to exchange managers.

Three agent groups — the California Association of Health Underwriters, the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of California, and the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of California — have joined to say they want to see the exchange give independent agents access to a Web-based platform.

The platform approach would help community-based, independent agents review and choose coverage options as efficiently as possible, while ensuring that security and privacy standards were met, representatives of the agent groups write in the letter.

The letter was signed by Juli Broyles of CAHU, John Norwood of IIABCal, and Shari McHugh of NAIFA California.

In other Covered California exchange agents news:

  • The exchange says it had 12,236 certified insurance agents on April 8, up from 11,069 on Feb. 28.
  • The exchange says it mailed $302,006 in checks to 276 enrollment support entities March 14 and $492,942 in payments to 393 entities April 16.
