Newborns can’t be added to plans on

Designers of failed to include a tool for adding new babies to families’ coverage, the Associated Press is reporting.

The website glitch affects parents who buy private “qualified health plans” through the 36 federal exchanges run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the HHS arm that runs, is telling carriers to have new parents call them directly to add newborns temporarily while it develops a tool to add babies to coverage through, according to AP.

Once the “add baby” tool is ready, the parents will have to use — or a broker, exchange call center or in-person exchange helper — to formally add babies to their coverage.
