Spying clouds PPACA tech meeting

President Obama brought technology executives to the White House today to talk about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and introduce the new HealthCare.gov advisor, Kurt DelBene.

DelBene, who has been president of the Microsoft Office Division, is succeeding Jeff Zients as the top HealthCare.gov advisor for Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

DelBene is supposed to help Sebelius and Marilyn Tavenner, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, oversee the exchange enrollment system’s general contractor, QSSI.

But the technology executives — including top officers from Google, Microsoft, Comcast, Twitter and Apple — reportedly focused on the need to rein in national security surveillance programs.

When the executives came out of their meeting with President Obama and Vice President Biden, they said nothing about DelBene, PPACA or HealthCare.gov.

In a statement, they said only that they appreciated the opportunity to talk to the president about their views on government surveillance.

“We urge him to move aggressively on reform,” the executives said.
