Members of the Senate Finance Committee today voted unanimously, by a voice vote, to recommend that the Senate confirm Marilyn Tavenner to be the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Tavenner, a nurse and former hospital administrator, has been the acting administrator of the agency, which is an arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), since 2011.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, a Republican from Virginia, signaled that Tavenner would benefit from GOP support April 9, when he introduced her at a committee hearing.
In addition to overseeing Medicare and Medicaid, Tavenner has been overseeing the Center for Consumer Information & Insurance Oversight (CCIIO), the agency responsible for implementing many of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) provisions that affect the commercial health insurance market.
