AB 460, a bill filed by California assemblyman Tom Ammiano, would criminalize the act of health insurers not providing infertility treatment to same-sex couples. Under current state law, California requires group plans to provide coverage for infertility treatment — with the exception of in vitro fertilization — to couples who have tried for one year to have a child without conception. However, how would this apply to same-sex couples seeing as conceiving a child together is not possible naturally? What will this do to health care costs in the Golden State?
