Scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland have devised a tiny chip that, placed underneath the skin, can sense for five compounds in the blood and transmit the data wirelessly (and safely) to allow for ongoing medical monitoring in patients against ailments such as heart disease. So far the devices have worked on lab animals, and are reported to be safe for use with humans. If they live up to expectations, they could transform medical diagnostics.
