Kentucky Senate panel revives Christian health care bill

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky state Senate panel has revived a bill that would exempt a Christians-only health care ministry from Kentucky’s insurance regulations.

The bill — introduced as Senate Bill 3 in the Senate and as House Bill 365 in the House — had passed the Senate last month only to die in a House committee over concerns about its failure to comply with regulations.

On Tuesday the Senate Committee on Banking and Insurance tacked the proposal onto a House bill, which the Senate is expected to approve.

The bill then will return to the House Committee on Banking and Insurance, where it originally died.

A judge ordered a health care ministry to stop operating last year over regulation concerns. The ministry resembles secular insurance in some ways but only allows participation by people who pledge to live the way organizers of the ministry believe that Christians ought to live.
